From fundamental research to industrial process measuring technology

In 1954, the solid electrolyte research began in Greifswald. Here, the world basic patent for potentiometric gas analysis by solid electrolyte cells originated in 1958. The "Research Group Solid Electrolytes" of the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-University of Greifswald developed new sensor systems in cooperation with industrial users. As a result, in March 1968, the world's first flue gas probe for the optimization of large combustion plants was commissioned in Dresden. Already in the sixties, the basics for today's lambda sensors for measurements of the oxygen concentration in exhaust gas, which are commonly used in car industry, were developed. Until its termination in 1999, the research group published more than 150 papers and applied for approx. 100 patents.

In the beginning of 1990, members of the "Research Group Solid Electrolytes" and the "Scientific Device Construction of EMA University" founded the ZIROX -Sensoren & Elektronik GmbH. The company works on new application fields of solid electrolyte sensors in process measuring technology using the knowledge acquired in the research group.

Today, the ZIROX GmbH is one of the world's leading manufacturers of high-quality gas analyzers and measuring systems based on solid electrolytes. A number of products have achieved a unique selling position worldwide, e.g. the catalytically inactive potentiometric oxygen-measuring cell. This cell unites the advantages of the conventional high-temperature solid electrolyte sensors and the cold electrochemical oxygen sensors (Clark cells).

In addition to the basic field of solid electrolyte sensor technology, other sensor principles have been adapted and new measuring methods have been developed for several years in order to provide customized solutions for specific measuring tasks to the users. At present, approx. 2,500 devices and measuring systems are sold to customers in 68 countries worldwide every year. There is a range of approx. 750 devices and sensor variations. The close interlinking of development and production, which features a manufactory character because of the special requirements, allows a very short response time for a customized system development.
